What happens on the day
Shelvers Way and Walton on the Hill are worked at the cylinder. The feed, the isolator, the thermostat and the element are tested. If that element or that seal has to come off the boss, the cylinder is drained after it is switched off. The part those tests name is the one that goes back on, whether that is the element, the thermostat, the switch or the seal. The cylinder is left to warm, and the thermostat is seen to cut out. A new cylinder, plumbing leaks and any gas boiler work stay out.
- Tests at the cylinderShelvers Way, Walton on the Hill and The Avenue have the feed, the isolator, the thermostat and the element tested. The tank is not condemned before those tests.
- Fit the part that failedIf that element or that seal has to come off the boss, the cylinder is drained after it is switched off. The part the tests named is the one replaced. The cylinder itself is not swapped on this visit.
- Tank left heatingThe cylinder is left to warm, and the thermostat is seen to cut out. Hours and parts are written for the visit. Valves, ballcocks, the cold cistern and any gas boiler are not touched.

Can you repair an immersion on Shelvers Way?
Yes. Shelvers Way, Walton on the Hill and The Avenue have the feed, the isolator, the thermostat and the element tested at the cylinder. The part that has failed is replaced after that.
Is the tank itself replaced?
No. A replacement tank is not this repair. When the cylinder itself is the failure, we stop and say so, rather than dressing a new tank up as an element change.
When is the cylinder drained?
The cylinder is drained when the element or the seal has to come off the boss. A thermostat or an isolator may not need that. Shelvers Way and Walton on the Hill are judged from the tests.
Do you fix a leaking valve?
No. Plumbing leaks, valves, ballcocks and the cold cistern are not this visit. Nor is a gas boiler or the central heating.
How do you know the tank is heating?
The tank is left warming and the thermostat is checked so it cuts out. Hours and parts for that visit are written down before we leave The Avenue or Shelvers Way.
