Light fitting / dimmer / switch replacement carried out by an electrician by TMB Electrics

Light fitting and switch replacement

TMB Electrics replaces light fittings, dimmers and switches in homes and business premises around Banstead. A new pendant, ceiling light, dimmer or wall switch is connected to the existing circuit, with the terminals made safe and a record of the small change.

I keep things straightforward: you deal with me from the first quote to the final check, with clear advice and no surprises along the way.

When a light fitting or switch needs replacing

  • A pendant that flickers, a dimmer that buzzes or a cracked switch is ready for a replacement on the circuit you already have.
  • The bulb is new but the fitting is dead, cracked or hanging from the rose.
  • The slider hums, the LEDs flicker or the dimmer trips the board when you turn it down.
  • The rocker is broken, the plate is loose on the wall or the switch is live when it should be off.

What is covered

A replacement puts a new fitting, dimmer or switch on the cables already in the ceiling or wall.

Included

  • Taking off the old fitting, dimmer or switch
  • Connecting the new pendant, ceiling light, dimmer or plate switch to the existing cables
  • Landing live, neutral and earth in the new terminals
  • Isolation of that lighting circuit at the fuse board
  • A working test of the light or the switched circuit

Not included

  • A new cable from the fuse board or a new lighting circuit
  • Plaster, paint or tile repairs around the old hole
  • Buying a decorative fitting unless that purchase is in the written price

What happens when a fitting is changed

TMB Electrics isolates the lighting circuit, swaps the part and tests the light or switch before restoring power.

  1. 01

    Arrival and isolation

The lighting circuit is identified at the board and isolated so the old fitting or switch can come off.

  2. 02

    The swap

The new fitting, dimmer or switch is connected to the existing conductors, with each core in a tight terminal.

  3. 03

    Test and paperwork

The circuit is restored, the light or switch is checked and a minor works record is left when the change needs one.

Light fitting and switch replacement prices

Light fitting, dimmer or switch replacement starts at £50. That starting price is for taking off one old part and putting a new fitting, dimmer or switch on the same cables.

  • A second fitting, a new back box or a dimmer that needs a different load is written into the price before work starts.
  • A fitting you already own is fitted at the same starting price when it matches the wiring already there.
  • Minor works certification starts at £80 when a written record of the small change is needed.

What you get after a fitting or switch swap

You are left with a working light or switch on the old circuit, safe terminals and a record of the small electrical change.

A light that works on the old circuit
The new pendant, ceiling light, dimmer or switch operates on the wiring already in the ceiling or wall.
Conductors in a safe terminal
Live, neutral and earth are landed in the new part so no core is left loose in the rose or back box.
Paperwork for a small electrical change
A minor works certificate is issued when the swap is a change that needs a written record.

Why customers choose TMB Electrics for a fitting change

TMB Electrics writes the price for a fitting, dimmer or switch before the old part comes off. The new part is tested and the paperwork for that small change is left when it is needed.

Light fitting and switch replacement questions

These are the questions people ask before a fitting, dimmer or switch is changed.

How much does a light fitting replacement cost?+

Replacement of a light fitting, dimmer or switch starts at £50 with TMB Electrics. That figure is for one part on the cables already in the ceiling or wall. A second fitting or a new back box is added to the written price before the old part comes off.

Trevor Bush

Can you fit a light I have already bought?+

Yes, TMB Electrics fits a pendant or switch you already own at the same £50 starting price. The new part has to match the wiring and the load on that circuit. A mismatch is explained while the old fitting is still up.

Trevor Bush

Do I need a certificate to change a light switch?+

TMB Electrics issues a minor works record when a small change needs paperwork. Minor works certification starts at £80. A new lighting circuit is priced as rewiring, not as a fitting swap.

Will the power go off in the whole house?+

TMB Electrics isolates the lighting circuit for that fitting or switch at the fuse board. Other circuits stay on unless they share that fuse. Power comes back once the new part has been tested.

Can a buzzing dimmer become a normal switch?+

Yes, a dimmer can come out and a standard plate switch can go on the same cables. LED lamps that flicker on an old dimmer can run on a plain on and off switch. TMB Electrics tests the new switch on that circuit before leaving.
