What happens on the day

Each plug in appliance is looked at, tested and labelled. Gathering them into one or two rooms at Ewell Court or Stoneleigh shortens the walking. A failed item is labelled and listed so it comes out of use. Fixed wiring is not part of this visit. Kingston Road cottages are the same routine, just with the list that is actually there.

  • Gather the listKettles, fridges, tools and other plug in items are brought to one place where that is practical. High Street premises are walked in the rooms where the items have to stay.
  • Test and labelThe plug, the lead and the casing are inspected, then the meter tests that class of appliance. A pass or fail label goes on the item itself, not only on a clipboard.
  • Leave the registerYou keep a list of what was tested, with the result and the date. Failed items are on that list so they can be repaired or removed. The fixed wiring is a different visit.

Ewell PAT questions

Still have a question?

Does this cover the sockets and the board?

No. PAT is the plug in appliances. The board, the fixed cable and the sockets are a condition report, booked on their own.

What happens to a failed kettle?

It is labelled fail and written on the register so it comes out of use. Repairing it is not part of the test.

Should Stoneleigh appliances be moved first?

Where you can, yes. One or two rooms makes the visit shorter. Items that cannot be moved, such as a fixed fridge position, are tested where they stand.

Is a High Street back room included?

Yes, if those appliances are on the list. Tell us about store rooms and staff kitchens so they are not left off the register.

Who keeps the register?

You do. It lists every item tested, the result and the date. That is the record a landlord or an employer asks to see.
