What happens on the day
The duct leaves through an existing void or an existing opening. Period cottages on The Street are not given a fresh hole through the wall when the building can be worked around. An extended kitchen on Barnett Wood Lane may be the room that needs the fan, and the void in that extension is checked on its own. The fan circuit is tested. A working light is not spare capacity for the fan.
- Use a void that existsThe duct path is an opening or a void already in the Ashtead building. The Street refuses a new hole through the cottage when there is another way, and the reason is written down.
- Check the extension apartA kitchen in the extended part of a Barnett Wood Lane semi has its own ceiling and its own outside wall. The void there is confirmed before a duct is promised through the original house.
- Put the fan on a real circuitThe fan is fed from a circuit that can take it. Agates Lane may need a new circuit rather than a spur off a long serving one. The test comes before the hole, even an existing one, is used.

Will you drill a new hole through a cottage on The Street?
Not as the default. The duct uses a void or an opening that is already there. A new hole is only described if the cottage has no other way to exhaust.
Is the extension on Barnett Wood Lane ducted through the old house?
Only if that void is really there and it is the sensible exit. The extension is checked as its own structure first, which is how these enlarged semis are built.
Can the fan share a long serving circuit on Agates Lane?
Only when the test says the circuit can take it. A working light in the room is not spare capacity, and a new circuit is named if the test fails.
Does a 1930s house off Woodfield Lane need the consumer unit changed for a fan?
No. The second unit stays unless it has no way to feed the fan and a new circuit is required. That is a small addition, not a new unit.
Where does a fan in an Ashtead Park outbuilding exhaust?
Through a void in that building, fed from the board that serves it. The house roof is not used as a convenient exit for a different building.
