Consumer unit replacement in Ashtead
TMB Electrics, based in Banstead, changes the consumer unit on the wall in Ashtead. Off Craddocks Avenue that is often already a second unit, and other boards on an Ashtead Park house stay put.

What happens on the day
1930s houses off Craddocks Avenue and Woodfield Lane are mostly on a second consumer unit already, so the job is that unit, not a guess from the decade. On the Ashtead Park side the supply is spread over several boards, and only the board being changed is replaced. Period cottages along The Street keep the new unit where the old one stands, because the building is worked around rather than cut through.
- Change the unit that is thereWoodfield Lane houses are surveyed at the second consumer unit already fitted. Ways, the tails and the earthing are recorded before a replacement is specified, and the old unit is not assumed from the age of the house.
- Leave the other boardsAn Ashtead Park house with several boards has the tired one replaced and the rest left in service. An outbuilding board is changed only when that board is the one named for this job.
- Sit it where the old one sitsThe Street cottages take the new unit in the place of the old one. Cable is brought around the cottage rather than through the fabric, and finishes that have to stay are left untouched.

Is the second consumer unit off Craddocks Avenue the one you change?
Yes when that is the unit on the wall. Most 1930s houses there are already on a second unit, and the replacement is specified from that unit, not from the original the house once had.
Do all the boards come out on the Ashtead Park side?
No. The supply there is often spread over several boards and outbuildings. Only the board named for the job is changed. The others stay.
Will a cottage on The Street be chased so the new unit fits?
No. The new unit goes where the old one is. Cable is planned around the building, and plaster or timber that has to stay is not opened for a neater line.
Does an extended semi on Agates Lane need a new unit for the extension?
Only if that unit is the one that is finished. The extension may be on a long serving circuit of its own. That circuit is identified before anyone treats the whole house as one board.
Are the lights and sockets rewired as part of this?
No. Existing circuits are tested onto the new unit. A circuit that cannot be reconnected safely is written up on its own, and the rest of the house is not rebuilt for it.
