When to replace a fuse board
- The fuse board, or consumer unit, protects every circuit in the house. Old ones do not protect people from electric shock the way modern ones do.
- No RCD protection at all. Replacing it is the single biggest safety improvement in an older house.
- Many 1980s and 1990s boards have breakers but no RCDs. An RCD cuts the power in milliseconds if something goes wrong.

A board change takes half a day to a day. The power is off for most of it.

The old unit comes out, the new one goes in and each circuit is reconnected and labelled.

Everything is tested live, you get a walk through of the new board, and the certificate follows.
