When to replace a fuse board
The fuse board, or consumer unit, protects every circuit in the house. Old ones do not protect people from electric shock the way modern ones do.
- Wire fuses or a wooden boardNo RCD protection at all. Replacing it is the single biggest safety improvement in an older house.
- No RCD on the socketsMany 1980s and 1990s boards have breakers but no RCDs. An RCD cuts the power in milliseconds if something goes wrong.
- Before adding circuitsAn EV charger, an electric shower or a kitchen refit often needs space and protection the old board does not have.
- After an EICRA C2 on the board is the most common reason a rented home fails its EICR.
What happens on the day
A board change takes half a day to a day. The power is off for most of it.
