Fuse board and consumer unit upgrade in Banstead

TMB Electrics replaces old fuse boxes with modern consumer units across Banstead and Surrey, with RCD protection on every circuit, tested and certified on the day.

When to replace a fuse board

  • The fuse board, or consumer unit, protects every circuit in the house. Old ones do not protect people from electric shock the way modern ones do.
  • No RCD protection at all. Replacing it is the single biggest safety improvement in an older house.
  • Many 1980s and 1990s boards have breakers but no RCDs. An RCD cuts the power in milliseconds if something goes wrong.
  • An EV charger, an electric shower or a kitchen refit often needs space and protection the old board does not have.

What the replacement covers

The old unit comes out and a new metal consumer unit goes in, with every circuit tested.

Included when agreed

  • A new metal consumer unit with RCD protection and surge protection
  • Every existing circuit reconnected and labelled
  • Testing of every circuit before the power goes back on
  • An Electrical Installation Certificate, notified under Part P

Not included automatically

  • Repairs to faults the testing finds on existing circuits
  • New circuits, which are priced separately
  • Upgrading the main earthing or bonding, if needed, which is quoted before the work

What happens on the day

A board change takes half a day to a day. The power is off for most of it.

  1. 01

    Test the circuits first

Every circuit is tested before it goes on the new board, so a hidden fault does not trip the new RCDs.

  2. 02

    Swap the board

The old unit comes out, the new one goes in and each circuit is reconnected and labelled.

  3. 03

    Test and certify

Everything is tested live, you get a walk through of the new board, and the certificate follows.

Fuse board replacement price

A consumer unit replacement is priced per board. The price includes the new unit, the labour and the certificate.

  • Faults found on existing circuits during testing are quoted separately.
  • Earthing and bonding upgrades, where needed, are quoted before the board is changed.
