When a house needs rewiring
- Wiring does not last forever. Rubber or fabric cables, a fuse board with wire fuses, sockets that get warm and an EICR full of C2s all point the same way.
- Homes wired before the 1970s, or on their original circuits, are the usual candidates. Many 1930s semis around Banstead and Sutton are on their second or third board but still the first wiring.

How a rewire is done
A full rewire takes about a week for a three bedroom house and works best with the house empty or the rooms cleared in turn.

Cables are run under floors and chased into walls. This is the messy part.

Second fix and test
Sockets, switches, lights and the new board go in, then every circuit is tested and certified.

Do I have to rewire, or can I just replace the fuse board?+
If the cables test fine, a new board is often enough. If they do not, a new board on bad wiring is money wasted. Testing first tells us which.
