Consumer unit replacement in Chipstead

A consumer unit change in Chipstead replaces the unit in front of the cable. The older cabling behind that unit stays as it is unless the tests say a circuit cannot be reconnected.

How a Chipstead board change is costed

The figure is the consumer unit and the tests that let circuits be reconnected. It does not include new cable through a cottage, and it does not include a feed out to a stable or garden room.

From £375

Included when agreed

  • A new metal consumer unit with RCD protection and surge protection
  • Every existing circuit reconnected and labelled
  • Testing of every circuit before the power goes back on
  • An Electrical Installation Certificate, notified under Part P

  • American Express
  • Apple Pay

  • Pay by bank
  • Bank transfer
  • A circuit that fails its test stays disconnected and is priced apart.
  • Digging between the road and the house is not part of this change.
  • A stable feed is a different circuit and a different figure.

What happens on the day

We isolate the supply, remove the unit that is there, and fit the new one to the circuits that test as fit to reconnect. On a Chipstead house the unit being removed may already look newer than the cable behind it. That cable is not renewed as part of fitting the unit. Where the supply runs a long way in from the road, that incoming run stays in the ground. A feed onward to a stable is left alone unless it was booked as its own circuit.

  • Change the unit onlyThe new consumer unit is fitted and each circuit is tested before it is reconnected. Circuits that fail are left off and written down, not forced back on.
  • Leave the older cableCable that was already behind the old unit is not pulled out because the fascia is being changed. A cottage on High Road keeps the cable that follows the building.
  • Leave the incoming runThe supply that runs a long way in from the road is not excavated so a unit can be changed. The work is at the board, inside the house.

Questions about a Chipstead board change

Still have a question?

Does a new unit renew the cable behind it?

No. The unit is what changes. Much older cabling can sit behind a unit that already looked recent, and that cable stays until a separate job replaces it.

Will the supply from the road be replaced?

No. On the valley slopes that run is long, and a board change does not dig it up. The new unit is connected to the supply that is already there.

Can the stable be moved onto the new unit the same day?

Only if that feed was part of the booking and it tests as fit. A feed that is too small for the stable is not quietly landed on the new unit.

What happens to a circuit that fails?

It stays off. We write which circuit failed and what it would take to put it back. The rest of the unit can still be completed.

Are cottages on High Road treated as rewires?

No. The cable that follows the cottage stays. The visit fits a unit to that cable. Rewiring the cottage is a different booking.
