What happens on the day
A downlight needs a void, and weatherboarded cottages on Kingston Road and West Street do not have a clear void in every bay. Positions are marked only where the void is real. On the High Street, finishes that must stay untouched are noted before a hole is cut. The circuit is tested when the lamps are in. Fire hoods are used where the ceiling needs them.
- Mark real voidsKingston Road and Mill Lane ceilings are checked bay by bay. A bay with no void does not get a hole. The positions you want are moved to a bay that can take the lamp.
- Protect the finishHigh Street and Church Street finishes that have to remain are photographed in the note for the day, and the hole stays clear of them. Making good of decoration is separate.
- Lamp, hood and testLamps go in with a fire hood where the ceiling construction calls for one. The circuit is tested. A new circuit from the board, if the lighting needs one, is described before it is added.

What if a Kingston Road bay has no void?
That bay is skipped. The lamp moves to a bay that can take it. We do not cut a hole into a solid or unknown ceiling.
Is plaster on the High Street made good afterwards?
The electrical figure stops at the lamps, the hoods and the tests. Decoration and plaster repairs are arranged separately.
Are fire hoods used?
Where the ceiling needs them, yes. The hood goes in with the lamp, and the circuit is tested after the set is fitted.
Can the old ceiling rose stay as well?
If you want it to, and the circuit can carry both. Say so while the positions are marked, including on West Street.
Does this add a lighting circuit?
Only when the present circuit cannot take the lamps, and only after that circuit is described. Many Ewell rooms stay on the lighting circuit already there.
