What happens on the day
Before the old units come out we write down the cooker, hob and every other appliance that will stay, then test the circuit meant to feed them. A kitchen in a cottage near the cricket green on High Road may sit on cable that follows the building, with a consumer unit in front of it that looks newer than that cable. We count the ways on the unit that will actually feed the cooker. A stable or garden room is not treated as spare capacity for the hob.
- List the appliances firstEach appliance that will stay is written down with the circuit proposed for it. A wish added after the units are out is checked against those circuits before it is connected.
- Test the cottage cableWhere the kitchen cable follows the High Road cottage, that cable is tested for the load. A recent consumer unit does not stand in for that test.
- Keep other buildings off the cookerThe feed to a stable or garden room is not borrowed for the hob. If the kitchen needs a new circuit, that circuit is named as a kitchen circuit.

Can the old cooker cable feed the new hob?
Only when it tests as able to. In a cottage on High Road that cable may follow the building and be older than the consumer unit in front of it.
Will you refill the kitchen cabinets?
No. We connect the electrical circuits. The cabinets, the worktop and the plumbing stay with the kitchen fitter.
Is the garden room a place to land a spare oven?
No. That room has its own feed, often already asked to carry more than it was put in for. The oven stays on a kitchen circuit.
Does a new looking unit mean spare ways?
No. We count the ways. A unit can look recent and still front older cabling with nothing spare for a second oven.
Are valley houses different from the cottages?
The appliance list is the same idea. A house on the slope may have a long supply in from the road, and that run is not opened so a hob can be connected.
